A Luxurious Primary Suite in Happy Valley

This Happy Valley primary suite was a large custom build out, planned around three zones that each got real room: the shower, the freestanding tub, and a long custom vanity. The same stone, wood, and black metal carry through all three, so the suite reads as one deliberate design.

The shower

Large format tile runs across a heated floor and continues right into the shower, where the pan is heated too, and so is the quartz bench, so there is no cold stone to step onto or sit on. A high quality Kohler system runs the shower behind a custom black metal framed glass door. The back wall is quartz instead of tile, with a quartz niche lit by recessed lighting.

The freestanding tub

The freestanding tub sits in its own alcove beneath an arched window of reeded glass, fed by a floor mounted filler with nothing crowding it. The light comes through soft, and the tub reads as the quiet center of the room.

A freestanding tub is one of the most requested features in a remodel right now, and it holds its value the way few finishes do. There is history in that. The claw foot cast iron tub was the status piece of its day, something only the well off could put in a home. Those tubs have since become affordable, so a look that once signaled money now just signals good taste, and it still anchors a primary suite.

The vanity

The custom wood vanity runs the length of one wall with Kohler faucets and a stone top. The wall behind it is tiled to the ceiling, and the mirrors run down behind the vanity, so the counter looks like it floats and the room gains depth. Pendant lights drop from the ceiling, and warm lighting under the cabinets glows low after dark, so the vanity doubles as a night light.
