Is luxury vinyl plank flooring worth it?
For kitchens, bathrooms, entries, basements, and busy family homes, yes. Luxury vinyl plank is fully waterproof, resists scratches and dents better than real wood, installs over most existing subfloors, and costs meaningfully less than hardwood. What it gives up is refinishing: when LVP wears out you replace it, where hardwood can be sanded back to new several times.

Thin, rigid plank telegraphs everything under it. A floor that reads flat enough for carpet is often not flat enough for LVP, so we self level the low spots and grind the high ones. Skipping that step is why some vinyl floors click and flex underfoot.

Is LVP really waterproof?
The plank itself is, which is why it works in bathrooms and basements where hardwood cannot go. The seams are water resistant rather than sealed, so a spill wipes up with no damage but standing water from a burst supply line will eventually find its way underneath. For a bathroom floor over a living space, tile with a membrane is still the safer build.
Can LVP be installed over existing flooring?
Often, yes. It can go over most flat, sound subfloors and over some existing hard surfaces, which saves demo cost. The condition that decides it is flatness, not what is currently down. We check the floor with a straightedge and level what needs leveling before quoting the install.
How does LVP compare to laminate?
LVP is waterproof and quieter underfoot; laminate has a fiberboard core that swells if water sits on it, though it often costs a little less and some lines have a sharper wood grain print. In Portland kitchens and bathrooms we recommend LVP nearly every time. Laminate is a reasonable choice for bedrooms and offices on a tight budget.
How long does LVP flooring last?
A quality plank with a thick wear layer holds up fifteen to twenty years or more in a normal household, and longer in low traffic rooms. The wear layer thickness matters more than the brand or the price. When it does wear out, it gets replaced rather than refinished, which is the main trade against hardwood.
