Quartz or natural stone: which countertop should you choose?
Quartz is the workhorse: nonporous, consistent in pattern, and nearly maintenance free, which is why it goes into most of our kitchens. Natural stone, granite, marble, and quartzite, brings depth and one of a kind veining that quartz imitates but never quite matches, at the cost of periodic sealing. Marble is the most beautiful and the most delicate; quartzite gets close to the look with far more durability.

How much do quartz countertops cost compared to granite?
In the Portland market they overlap heavily: entry level granite often costs less than premium quartz, and designer quartz can cost more than exotic natural stone. The bigger cost drivers are square footage, edge profile, cutouts, and how many slabs your layout needs. We price counters as part of the kitchen so you see the real installed number, not a per square foot teaser.
Do quartz countertops scratch or stain?
Quartz resists both better than nearly any other surface, which is why it dominates modern kitchens. It is not invincible: a hot pan straight off the burner can scorch the resin, so trivets still matter. Day to day, it needs nothing but soap and water, with no sealing ever.
Does natural stone need to be sealed?
Granite and quartzite should be sealed about once a year, a ten minute wipe on job you can do yourself. Marble needs more care: it etches with acids like lemon and wine regardless of sealer, which is part of its lived in character. If that patina sounds like a flaw rather than a feature, quartz or quartzite is the better choice.
When are countertops installed during a kitchen remodel?
After cabinets are set and leveled. The counters are templated on the installed cabinetry, fabrication typically takes one to two weeks, and installation itself is usually a single day. The backsplash goes in after the counters, so the tile meets the finished surface cleanly.
